Myth and Reality: Asking About SuicideWhy asking does not cause suicidal thoughts

MYTH

Bringing up the topic of suicide may cause someone to become more suicidal.

REALITY

There is no evidence that asking someone about suicidal thoughts will lead to an increase in suicidal behaviors or attempts.

Most people in crisis simply want someone to show they care. Asking increases connectedness, and connectedness reduces risk.
